Transforming [d] + [y] | English Pronunciation Lesson

You may have noticed that a transformation happens when a word ending in the [d] sound is followed by a word that begins with a [y] sound.

Example

When Americans speak casually, they wouldn’t typically say:

  • “Where did you go? [wɛr dɪd yuw gow]

but they would connect the speech and combine the “did” and the “you”.

  • “did” + “you” ==> “didyou”

[d] + [y] ==> [dʒ]

We then de-stress the function word “you”, so that “did you” becomes:

  • [dɪdʒyə]

Listen and Repeat

  • “Did you go?” [dɪdʒyə GOW]
  • “What did you do?” [wʌdʒyə DUW]
  • “Would you do that for me?” [wɜdʒyə]
  • “Could you go now?” [kɜdʒyə]
