Using the Words “such” & “so” in English

Listen to the audio while reading the post

If you asked an American when we use the word “such” [sʌtʃ] instead of “so”, it wouldn’t be so easy for that person to explain the difference between the use of the two words. The dictionary comes in handy here to help differentiate these similarly used words.

Such

Dictionary.com defines the adjective “such” as:

  1. of the kind, character, degree, extent, etc., of that indicated or implied.

So

Similarly, the informal use of “so” is defined by dictionary.com as:

  • to the extent or degree indicated or suggested
  • Informal: very or extremely
Basically, we use “such” and “so” to describe the degree of something, usually to say “very much”.
Notice that the example sentences I used below put a noun phrase after “such” and an adjective after “so”, but these are just a small sampling of phrasings to help you differentiate the use of the words “such” and “so”.
Review the following sentences to practice the difference in use between “such” and “so” when describing the degree of something. Feel free to repeat after me in the audio for pronunciation practice.

Examples

  • “He is such a kidder.”
  • “He is so funny.”
  • “There is such a strong smell in this room.”
  • “It is so smelly in this room.”
  • “This is such a delicious meal. Thank you!”
  • “This meal is so delicious. Thank you!”
  • “Her behavior is terrible. She is such a jerk!”
  • “Her behavior is terrible. She is always so mean!”
